FALL IS IN THE AIR
November 2013
I know it has been such a long time since I updated our blog and I apologize for the wait. So many of you have been so patiently waiting as our family has been in a black whole and are finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Thank goodness for family, friends and faith. I will not go into a lot of detail but to sum it up we lost about 8 months of our families income, two of our kids had major surgery from separate sports injuries. Then to top it off I was in and out of the hospital for a month with a week long visit at the end that finally got my health back on track. To say the least it has been a trying year and thank God we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Now for the people who know us we really do not like to think about the negative so lets get onto the good stuff. We have brand new puppies on the ground and they are doing great. Hadley and Nick have 9 puppies (7 boys and 2 girls). Gorgeous dark chocolates and 3 light creamy puppies. Ellie and Newman have 4 black all english males. Normally I would not be excited about such a small litter and all males but Ellie has an incredible pedigree and we have been trying to get her pregnant for 3 years. Callie and Nick also have all chocolate puppies, 7 girls and 2 boys. All three litters will be ready for their forever homes in December.
Lots of great litters on the way in November and December in every color, fox red, white, yellow, black and chocolate. Some of the litters we are expecting are out of our veteran parents and some out of newbie Moms and Dads. I am happy to accept deposits on our proven litters but not the newbies or better yet just by color and sex of puppy.
We are getting ready to remodel the old green house into a state of the art birthing center. Of course we will have to complete in stages but Ron has come up with some amazing plans with the help of our Vet and input from other breeders. I will keep you up to date on the progress as our family will be doing all the labor so it will be slower than I would like.
Besides dogs and puppies we have been so busy. Jeff is a senior this year and working on receiving his level one welding certificate. Jennifer is cheering for football and basketball while keeping straight A’s. Jessica has been traveling on the weekends competing in California Junior Livestock Association (jackpots) she is 2nd in the state of California for showing pigs. Julia is in 3rd grade and Jada is in 1st grade and they keep us laughing and looking forward to everyday.
Our fall weather is here and it was so peaceful on the ranch this morning. After the morning chores Ron and I were standing in the middle of the pasture watching the dogs play and eat walnuts. Our dogs love to lay under the walnut trees right now because a fresh crop of nuts has fallen to the ground. They pick up the walnut and crack them until they get the walnut meat out. If they were not cracking walnuts Ron was playing ball with them. It is one of the most rewarding things to watch the dogs have fun and enjoy life. We all need to learn from them especially me as I do not like to sit down and just relax.
Thank you to everyone that kept us in their thoughts and prayers. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing pictures of your puppies as they grow up.
NEW YEAR 2013
February 2013
Happy New Year to everyone, I just want to thank all the puppy families for the wonderful Christmas cards and pictures that they sent to our family this year. I plan on scanning the pictures and posting them on the website page "loved by others"for everyone to enjoy. Starting the end of this month we are expecting several great litters of puppies. The puppies will be born in the next month and will be ready to go home with you in the early spring. I'm really excited about several of our girls pregnancy's because they had never had puppies or had not conceived in a long time. We have done lots of research and investigating before we decided to purchase very expensive medication to help our girls to conceive and stay pregnant. Here are a couple of litters we are expecting. Ruger and Nick (Josie's son) are expecting all three colors of puppies, yellow, chocolate and black at the end of this month. Lacy and Newman are having yellow and black puppies around January 27th. If you have been to our house Lacy is a big black blocky English girl that is always in the front yard because she is our personal alarm. If anything unusual happens out front she will alert us and then stop barking after we check it out. Which is really nice when you live out in the country. Lucy (Newman and Lola's daughter) is bred to Buddy. They will have all yellow puppies from light to dark yellow the first part of February. Josie our 100% English chocolate female is bred to a very blocky male at Kelley green labradors. If you want a big and heavy bone chocolate you might want to check out Josie's puppies due February 5th. We're going to have lots of chocolate puppies because Bella is bred to Nick, Hadley is also bred to Dante at Kelley Green labradors all three of these girls will be having chocolate puppies. Promise and Newman are expecting snow white English puppies the first part of February. We are going to have every color of Labrador puppies this spring because our Fox Reds are also going to be coming into heat real soon. If you want a puppy for the spring you might want to call or email me to get a spot on the list.
We are offering a new service to help families that do not want to go through the initial puppy phase. A starter puppy stays with us for a few extra weeks to be trained. They are taught how to walk on a leash without pulling or tugging. The puppy is expected to stay in the heel command until you stop and at that time they are taught to sit. A starter puppy also learns how to go into the crate when you tell them the command kennel.
I hope everyones family had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Our family had lots of fun this year. We did several little day trips like going to the snow, ice skating, roller skating, family dinners and game nights at home. Now that the vacation is over it seems like we are going to have a very busy spring. Luke and Jessica are going to several pig shows with their pigs. Jeff is playing lacrosse. Jennifer is starting as Libero for competitive volleyball. Julia and Jada are enjoying school and going to gymnastics two days a week. Plus we are expecting two new calves this spring and several cute puppies.
Last but not least I want to thank all of you for the referrals, pictures and emails. Our family always enjoys seeing and hearing about your puppies. Your stories make for great dinner conversations.
SUMMER TIME IS HERE!
June 2012
Wow, school is out and are summer is already looking full. I am so excited for several reasons, we are expecting some really nice pups, the kids are out of school, getting ready for State and County fair and our miniature Hereford is about to have her 1st calf.
Before I start rambling on about all the happenings on the ranch I want to tell you about a great experience Ron and I just had in Chico. It was Ron's birthday and we decided to accept an invitation up to Chico's newest state of the art veterinary hospital. When we arrived we were given a tour of the complete facility by one of the owners and then escorted to their conference room where we were joined by 3 more veterinarians and to professionals from a highly respected dog food company to talk about dog nutrition. After the presentation Ron and I were invited to go out to dinner with the 3 veterinarians, their wives and the reps that flew in from back East. After dinner we have been asked by the same hospital to help them develop a new program for breeders. I am looking forward to expressing the veterinary needs of the breeder and customers.
Let's talk about who is expecting puppies and when. Tonka and Buddy will be having black and yellow to Fox red puppies the beginning of July. If anyone is interested we have started taking deposits and you can view puppies from their last litter together on our website by clicking on Tonka's picture. Ruger and Nick are expecting their 1st litter together of all chocolates. Nick is the son of Josie and Kelly Greens Mallorn's Toblerone. We are getting ready to breed Lucy (Newman & Lola's daughter) for the 1st time to Tucker and they will be having black to light yellow english puppies. I'm really excited to see Lucy's puppies and she is such a gorgeous and loving dog, we know Tucker produces great pups. We are also getting ready to breed two Fox red English litters out of Pippi and Stella Rose. These 2 girls are sisters out of Rita and Kelley Greens Baby Light My Fire. I have spent hours deciding who will be the lucky man for my girls as I am dedicated to improving the Labrador breed by studying pedigree's, conformation and genetics to produce the best puppy possible. I always want to produce a puppy that we would want to bring home to our 6 children.
We have a sweet little girl that is ready for her new home out of Rhonda (Roxy and Grey Bear daughter) and Tucker. Parris and Newman puppies are absolutely adorable and are doing great. Bella and Tucker just had 6 dark chocolates that customers say will be soon milk chocolates because Bella is such a great mom and nursing them so much, lol. I don't think Bella's milk will change their dark coats to light milk chocolate but what do you think?
This month has been filled with educational seminars and I am loving it. I was lucky enough to spend the night in San Francisco and attend an educational seminar by Mira Harris from Washington. This was my 2nd time to listen to Mrs. Harris's and I always learn something.
I'm glad the kids are out of school but boy is it busy, this is just a quick run down of what is happening at Sterling Ranch besides Labradors. Luke just got back from a pig show in Iowa. All of the kids are showing pigs and dogs at state and County fair. Luke and Jeff are also showing the miniature Hereford's. We are super excited as Charity is expecting her 1st calf any day. Jeff has made the Sacramento lacrosse team and Jennifer is planning on playing volleyball for East Nicolaus high school. Luke and Jeff both received sectional awards for outstanding FFA projects. with so much going on we always have time to play with our furry family members and their puppies.
I want to thank everyone for keeping in touch and sending me some great e-mails and pictures. I have received at least 3 e-mails telling me about their dogs 1st experience swimming. I just received a message from Cindy saying that Honey has completed her 1st leg of AKC advance obedience, congratulations. Cindy has learned and done all of her own obedience training for Honey, what a great accomplishment. Another really fun e-mail was from two customers in the Bay Area that met unexpectedly at a party and after talking realized they both had puppies from Sterling Labradors and they both named their chocolate girls Stella. Now you can see why I absolutely love getting your e-mails and sharing your stories with the family at dinner time.
Take care and have a great summer.
